Château De Borght, Lakenmakersstraat 4-8 2800 Mechelen
KASTEEL DE BORGHT

Located in the Nekkerspoel district of Mechelen, De Borght Castle is a historic estate set within a vast 4.5-hectare park, 3.4 hectares of which will soon be open to the public. After decades of neglect, the castle found a new owner in 2023 who, in partnership with the city of Mechelen, is committed to restoring the site and transforming it into an exceptional space where nature, culture, and ecological innovation come together.

PRESENTATION

The estate’s origins date back to the 14th century, when it was home to a medieval fortress built on a moated mound. Over the centuries, the property evolved significantly. The original structure was destroyed in the 18th century, and the current château was constructed between 1858 and 1859 in a style blending Neo-Gothic and Flemish Neo-Renaissance elements. It was further expanded in 1908 and is surrounded by a landscaped park featuring picturesque elements such as a Neo-Gothic tower, a wrought-iron footbridge, and a scenic belvedere.

Château de Merode, Polderstraat 51 2260 Westerlo
MERODE CASTLE

Located in the heart of Westerlo, Merode Castle is deeply connected to the history of the region. Although it only became the property of the Merode family in the 15th century, the estate has embodied their heritage for centuries. Today, Prince Simon de Mérode and his family live here.

PRESENTATION

The castle has been in the Merode family since 1478, when the Council of Brabant officially granted it to Jan IV de Merode. Its current appearance is largely the result of renovations carried out under Jan-Philippe-Eugène de Merode (1674-1732), a prominent figure of his time, Grandee of Spain, Knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece, and Field Marshal of the Austrian Imperial Army. He designed an extensive network of avenues and enhanced the castle, creating a truly majestic setting.
